Book: The Problem With Forever, Jennifer L Armentrout
Series: Stand-alone
Publisher: Harlequin Teen
Release Date May 17th, 2016

From #1 New York Times bestselling author Jennifer L. Armentrout comes a riveting new story about friendship, survival, and finding your voice.

For some people, silence is a weapon. For Mallory “Mouse” Dodge, it’s a shield. Growing up, she learned that the best way to survive was to say nothing. And even though it’s been four years since her nightmare ended, she’s beginning to worry that the fear that holds her back will last a lifetime.

Now, after years of homeschooling with loving adoptive parents, Mallory must face a new milestone—spending her senior year at public high school. But of all the terrifying and exhilarating scenarios she’s imagined, there’s one she never dreamed of—that she’d run into Rider Stark, the friend and protector she hasn’t seen since childhood, on her very first day.

It doesn’t take long for Mallory to realize that the connection she shared with Rider never really faded. Yet the deeper their bond grows, the more it becomes apparent that she’s not the only one grappling with the lingering scars from the past. And as she watches Rider’s life spiral out of control, Mallory faces a choice between staying silent and speaking out—for the people she loves, the life she wants, and the truths that need to be heard.

My Review:

Mallory Dodge did not have a happy or conventional childhood. She didn’t have loving parents, or a warm bed to sleep in at night, or the guarantee that there would be food on the table every day. She didn’t grow up safe. Always told “not to make a sound” by her best friend and protector, Rider, for if she made any type of sound, their foster father would not be happy. This childhood fear resonated with Mallory, for at seventeen years old, silence is a shield. She struggles to have ordinary conversations with people as her tongue seems stuck.

“Words were not the enemy or the monster under my bed, but they held such power over me. They were like the ghost of a loved one, forever haunting me.”

Even though she was saved from her foster family by two people who care very deeply for her, Mallory still appears to be stuck in the past. But she knows she can’t stay stuck in the past forever, so like a brave little soldier, she’s ready to face her fears by attending her senior year at a public school, when she’s always been home-schooled. From this, Mallory meets someone from her past she never expected to see again: Rider Stark, her once best friend and protector.

And so what follows is Mallory and Rider helping each other face the demons in their past together and look forward to a bright future. Even though Mallory was saved from her foster home, Rider wasn’t as lucky. Therefore, they both have very different demons to face.

And it was so emotional to read! This is the book that will make you so truly grateful for everything good in your life, and what things you take for granted. I come from a loving family, and have a bright future ahead of me. But it’s so easy to forget that not everyone has that. Hearing about Mallory and Rider’s past, and seeing Mallory struggle with speaking broke my heart so many times. There were times when all she wanted to do was hide in her closet like when she was young and let Rider protect her, but we see her grow as she realises that she has to learn to save herself. She can’t always let Rider save her, even though he’s more than willing to.

I just loved her as a character. She was scared and brave at the same time. While most people remember the loud strength and bravery, all types of strength are important and should be acknowledged. Mallory’s quiet strength is just as significant. I loved how she praised herself every time she spoke, even if it was just three words.

“I was not going to rain on my own wow, because talking to new people was hard for me. Like as hard as it would be for someone to walk naked into class.”

And she and Rider were so amazing together. After not seeing each for years, their reunion was something special. And the romance between them was slow-building but sweet. It was obvious they cared so much about the other, but was it only because of the past they shared? Were they even the same people they were back then? We see them learn more about the person they’ve grown into, while remembering the child they once were. A lot of obstacles stood in their way, both from outside sources and their own insecurities, but by the end the right choice has been chosen and all you can do is cheer and try not to cry.

Mallory and Rider’s journey is something I believe everyone should read, especially if you’ve ever suffered from anxiety and would relate to what Mallory’s going through.

“None of this was forever. But trying was. Living was.”

  2. I haven't read a JLA book yet. I've been meaning to, but you know how time gets away from you. >.< Mallory seems like an interesting character - the "quiet" heroines aren't recognized nearly enough!
